Elowen: William Henry Searle Elowen
William Henry Searle
R567 R463 Discovery Miles 4 630 Save R104 (18%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

In the summer of 2017, Will and his wife Amy lost their baby, Elowen, a few days before their due date. After a traumatic induced birth, they returned from hospital to their cottage in the New Forest, grief-stricken and struggling to make sense of what happened to them. Unmoored by sadness, what became clear in the weeks and months following Elowen's death is that there is no established vocabulary with which to understand this experience, either for Will or the people around him. Indeed, as he discovers, there is no word in the English language for a parent who has lost a child. Without any linguistic or emotional scaffold, the disorientation of his grief feels ever more lonely and alienating. Elowen charts the darkness of Will's grief over the course of two years with unflinching honesty, but it also describes in sonorous prose what sustained him: the natural world, and in particular the silence and attentiveness of tracking wolves in the forests of Sweden. These animals, only ever fleetingly seen, nonetheless provided profound solace, and in the act of searching for them he began to find a way to live with his grief. This profoundly moving, ultimately uplifting book challenges the way we think about loss and help us to re-evaluate our relationship to the natural world. Elowen is not only a remarkable portrait of grief, but also an impassioned hymn to the wild and a treatise on the restorative potential of nature in uncertain times.

A History of St Catharine's College, Cambridge - Once Catharine Hall, Cambridge (Paperback): William Henry Samuel Jones A History of St Catharine's College, Cambridge - Once Catharine Hall, Cambridge (Paperback)
William Henry Samuel Jones
R1,297 Discovery Miles 12 970 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A History of St Catharine's College, Cambridge, by W. H. S. Jones, was originally published in 1936. The book documents the history of the college, which was founded in 1473 by Robert Woodlark, then the Provost of King's College. It is thought the name was chosen in honour of Catharine of France, the mother of King Henry VI, although it is also possible that it was named as part of the Renaissance cult of St Catharine, a patron saint of learning. The book charts the history of the college from the foundation to the 1930s, and is divided into chapters on topics including domestic history, key figures, and a section on documents, including statutes, income, authorities and correspondence. The book is generally acknowledged to be the authoritative text on St Catharine's College and will appeal to anyone interested in the University of Cambridge.

Jacke Jugeler (Paperback): William Henry Williams Jacke Jugeler (Paperback)
William Henry Williams
R680 Discovery Miles 6 800 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This 1914 scholarly edition of the mid-sixteenth-century play Jacke Jugeler contains an informative introduction and detailed notes. Little-known today, the play represents a pre-Shakespearean example of classical 'borrowing' - a Roman play by Plautus is adapted to an English domestic situation - and it is one of the first instances of confused identity and 'doubles' in English comedy. The text of this edition is taken from the unique original, probably published around 1562, in the collection of the Duke of Devonshire. In his Introduction, W. H. Williams proposes the likely identity of the play's author, and provides an analysis of the play's language to support his claim. He examines the connections in method, characters and language between Jacke Jugeler and Ralph Roister Doister, a play written and performed around the same time.

The Theory of Sets of Points (Paperback): William Henry Young, Grace Chisholm Young The Theory of Sets of Points (Paperback)
William Henry Young, Grace Chisholm Young
R1,095 Discovery Miles 10 950 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The theory of sets, described in the preface to this book as 'Georg Cantor's magnificent theory' was first developed in the 1870s, and was recognised as one of the most important new branches of mathematical science. W. H. Young and his wife Grace Chisholm Young wrote this book, published in 1906, as a 'simple presentation'; but they warn that it is effectively a work in progress: the writing 'has necessarily involved attempts to extend the frontier of existing knowledge, and to fill in gaps which broke the connexion between isolated parts of the subject.' The Young's were a dynamic force in mathematical research: William had been Grace's tutor at Girton College; she was subsequently the first woman to be awarded a Ph. D by the University of G ttingen. Cantor himself said of the book: 'It is a pleasure for me to see with what diligence, skill and success you have worked.'

I Got Somebody In Staunton - Stories (Paperback): William Henry Lewis I Got Somebody In Staunton - Stories (Paperback)
William Henry Lewis
R464 R379 Discovery Miles 3 790 Save R85 (18%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In twelve graceful, sensual stories, William Henry Lewis traces the line between the real and the imaginary, acknowledging the painful ghosts of the past in everyday encounters. Written in a style that has been acclaimed by our finest writers, from Edward P. Jones and Nikki Giovanni to Dave Eggers, "I Got Somebody in Staunton" is one of the most highly praised literary events to take on contemporary America.

In the title story, a young professor befriends an enigmatic white woman in a bar along the back roads of Virginia, but has second thoughts about driving her to a neighboring town as his uncle's stories of lynchings resonate through his mind. Another tale portrays a Kansas City jazz troupe's travels to Denver, where they hope to strike it big. Meanwhile, a man in the midst of paradise must decide whether he will languish or thrive.

"With I Got Somebody in Staunton" Lewis has lyrically and unflinchingly chronicled the lives of those most often neglected.

Songs of the Nativity - Being Christmas Carols, Ancient and Modern (Book): William Henry Husk Songs of the Nativity - Being Christmas Carols, Ancient and Modern (Book)
William Henry Husk
R783 Discovery Miles 7 830 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This collection of Christmas carols was published in 1864 by William Henry Husk (1814-87), a solicitor's clerk and amateur singer who was librarian of the Sacred Harmonic Society in London. He wrote many entries for the first edition of Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians, and in 1875 published An Account of the Musical Celebrations on St Cecilia's Day (also reissued in this series). He organises some eighty carols (some of which are familiar, others less known in these versions, and others no longer in common use) in two groups, religious and 'festive'. Each has a headnote explaining its origin, and the general introduction describes Christmas customs, including carol-singing, which Husk fears may be in decline. The songs range from 'A babe is born' and 'Here comes holly', to several variants of 'The boar's head carol', and Husk provides musical settings for twelve of them.

Schwatka's Search - Sledging in the Arctic in Quest of the Franklin Records (Paperback): William Henry Gilder Schwatka's Search - Sledging in the Arctic in Quest of the Franklin Records (Paperback)
William Henry Gilder
R1,035 Discovery Miles 10 350 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A cavalry officer in the US Army, with training in law and medicine, Frederick Schwatka (1849 92) became interested in the lost expedition of Sir John Franklin following the search attempts led by the American explorer Charles Francis Hall. Supported by the American Geographical Society, Schwatka sailed in 1878 with five others in search of written records, believed to be deposited in cairns. A soldier turned journalist, William Henry Gilder (1838 1900) accompanied Schwatka and published this illustrated account in 1882. Their sledge journey with a party of twelve Inuit was at that time the longest on record. No documents were found, but the expedition did discover artefacts and graves of Franklin's men. Schwatka concluded that no scientific results from Franklin existed. In his adoption of Inuit techniques for safe travel in the Arctic, he preceded Vilhjalmur Stefansson by many decades."

Lee turned the house into something of a museum for his antiquarian and scientific interests, constructing an observatory to the design of the his close friend William Henry Smyth (1788 1865), after whom Lee named a lunar sea. A naval officer, Smyth had helped to found the Royal Geographical Society in 1830. His Sidereal Chromatics (1864) and The Sailor's Word-Book (1867) are also reissued in this series. This charming history and description of Hartwell, its grounds, buildings and contents, appeared in two volumes between 1851 and 1864, illuminating especially the practice of contemporary astronomy. Illustrated throughout, the first volume (1851) includes coverage relating to the locality, the lords of the manor, the collected antiquities and the observatory."

William Henry Wheeler
R1,659 Discovery Miles 16 590 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A respected hydraulic engineer, William Henry Wheeler (1832-1915) established himself as an authority in the fields of low-lying land reclamation and drainage, embanking, and the improvement of tidal rivers and harbours. First published in 1868, Wheeler's historical work on the Fens of South Lincolnshire is reissued here in its much expanded second edition of 1896. It discusses in detail the reclamation of the fenland in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The coverage includes a history of each of the districts, the Acts of Parliament involved, the pumping machinery used, the management of the highways and waterways, the agriculture and geology of the area, and the costs associated with the whole reclamation project. Another of Wheeler's works, The Drainage of Fens and Low Lands (1888), is also reissued in this series. The books remain a rich source of information for local historians and civil engineers.

William Henry Wheeler
R779 Discovery Miles 7 790 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A respected hydraulic engineer, William Henry Wheeler (1832-1915) established himself as an authority in the fields of low-lying land reclamation and drainage, embanking, and the improvement of tidal rivers and harbours. Based on articles written for The Engineer in 1887, he published this more substantial work in 1888 to provide a practical point of reference for those working on existing drainage systems or designing and implementing new schemes. Drawing on first-hand knowledge of the low-lying fens of England and the polders of Holland, Wheeler describes the processes of drainage by gravitation and steam power. The book also includes chapters on lifting and draining water using the scoop wheel, the Archimedean screw pump and the centrifugal pump. Providing also a wealth of operational facts relating to pumping stations in England and abroad, this remains a rich source of information for those interested in the history of civil engineering.

The Sailor's Word-Book - An Alphabetical Digest of Nautical Terms (Paperback): William Henry Smyth The Sailor's Word-Book - An Alphabetical Digest of Nautical Terms (Paperback)
William Henry Smyth; Revised by Edward Belcher
R1,833 Discovery Miles 18 330 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Admiral William Henry Smyth (1780 1865) went to sea at an early age, becoming a sailor and surveyor with the East India Company, and later moving to Mediterranean waters. A founding member of the Royal Geographical Society in 1830, he spent much of his free time engaged in scientific pursuits. One of his final projects was this 'word-book' of nautical terminology, which he had been compiling throughout his career, and whose publication was eagerly anticipated by his fellow naval officers. Although Smyth died before it was published in 1867, his notes were edited by his family and revised by Sir Edward Belcher (1799 1877). Ranging from technical terminology to sailors' slang, Smyth's glossary contains more than 700 pages of definitions, arranged alphabetically, making it an indispensable source on nineteenth-century nautical vocabulary for both maritime historians and sailing aficionados.

R1,454 Discovery Miles 14 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The abbey of St Peter, which later became Gloucester Cathedral, had its origins in the seventh century and was re-established in the eleventh. It benefited considerably from Norman patronage, growing in importance, size and wealth. Henry III was crowned there in 1216, and it is where Edward II was buried. It subsequently became a place of pilgrimage, and received several benefactions from Edward III. Volume 1 of the abbey's records, edited by W. H. Hart and published in 1863, begins with a chronicle of the abbey's history from its foundation to the late fourteenth century. It also includes a comprehensive list of the lands held by the abbey. It is followed by the first 423 charters, arranged by location rather than date. The cartulary was compiled in the late thirteenth century, with some later insertions.
